Kate Middleton and Prince William were quite the haute couple at The Sun Military Awards, hosted at London's Imperial War Museum on Monday night. She wore a dramatic black velvet gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen (a favorite of hers, given it was the label behind her wedding gown) and accessorized with some serious sparkle in the form of jewelry.
The Duchess of Cambridge's strapless frock, cinched at the waist and so long it grazed the floor, was a sophisticated and glamorous statement, despite the less than streamlined bit of ruffle detail on the bustier. While head-to-toe velvet (much less black velvet!) can be a tricky and daring trend for many celebrities and notables to pull off, sometimes registering as overwrought, way too '80s or even gothic Halloween costume, it was perfect fit for Kate Middleton. And the diamonds didn't hurt either.
As The Sun reports, Middleton donned a stunner of a necklace—a wedding present from a family friend—lined with diamonds and rubies and set in silver. Earrings and a silver bracelet added more sparkle. Her other accessory was equally handsome: Prince William, who cut a sharp and polished profile in a tuxedo.
A tux-clad Prince Harry was also in attendance for the ceremony, which honored the brave British servicemen and women in the military. According to PopSugar, Harry even made quite the speech during the evening, saying, "I am a young Army officer, a serving solider. Like my brother, I share many of the same hopes, the same aspirations, and the same fears as all those who serve our Queen and country... By an accident of birth, though, it falls to 56473 Captain Wales humbly to express—on behalf of my comrades-in-arms and people up and down the country—the admiration we feel for the extraordinary men and women we honor here tonight."
Well said! No doubt Kate Middleton and Prince William were applauding proudly.
